About
State and Local TAx
Carter Shelton Jones, PLC combines the expertise and experience of a large firm with the personal service of a boutique to advise clients on the full spectrum of state and local tax issues, including consulting, planning, compliance, litigation and policy. We represent clients in matters involving a wide range of state and local taxes such as corporate income taxes, sales and use taxes, local business license taxes, property taxes, insurance taxes, telecommunications taxes, and unclaimed property. We focus on resolving our client's complex state and local tax problems and controversies, and we advise clients on state and local tax ramifications of business transactions while remaining responsive to the individual needs of each client. Representative issues include:
State tax nexus advice;
Letter ruling requests;
Multistate tax advice;
Audit strategy and defense
Informal taxpayer conferences;
Tax litigation; and
Criminal tax defense.
The firm's clients include large multinational corporations, small businesses, start-ups and high-net-worth individuals. Our specialized focus and smaller size enable us to provide the highest level of service in the most efficient manner to meet the specific needs of our clients.
While we focus our practice on state and local tax issues, we routinely advise our clients on the federal tax implications of transactions and collections matters and represent taxpayers before the United States Tax Court and in Federal court. We also assist nonprofit entities with tax and governance issues.
Estate and Succession Planning
Carter Shelton Jones provides full-service estate and succession planning, drafting wills, trusts (including charitable trusts, grantor trusts, asset protection trusts, and personal residence trusts), powers of attorney, advanced health care directives, and living wills. We also represent administrators and executors in the administration and probate process including probate of wills, estate and probate litigation matters and preparation of federal estate and state inheritance tax returns.
Business Representations
Business issues and tax issues often overlap, so we are frequently asked by our clients to assist with general legal issues related to the routine operation of our client's businesses, including contract review, dispute resolution, and entity formation.
